Under what conditions can the cost of the product be lowered?
Comparison of Renewable Energy and Nuclear Power Plant…

  1. Increasing the capacity or efficiency of the unit module lowers the cost.
  2. Increasing the number of modules will lower the cost.
  3. Increasing the number of power plants lowers the cost.

Many people compare small modular reactors (SMR) to solar and batteries. Solar panels have been repeatedly produced on a large scale, making them affordable.

But solar panels didn’t become cheap by breaking them into smaller pieces and making the same total.

We have expanded our module production exponentially.

We put more cells in each panel. We made bigger wafers and bigger cells.

We have economies of scale, both in number of units and in size.

We’re making larger form factor batteries. They’re cheaper and can be put in packs for less.

A lot of the power generation of wind turbines has been to figure out how to make it bigger.

We’re not going to make nuclear power less expensive. We have to make it over and over on a large scale in the same way we did with solar, batteries, wind turbines, and gas turbines.

If it was cheaper to build a 10MW reactor, we would have done the same in the 70s. We built a small reactor for military use. We scaled up wind turbines for commercial power generation.

Criticizing the hype about ultra-small reactors is not ‘anti-nuclear’. Reactor gets a lot of media attention, but it’s not a solution for industrial-scale power generation.

We’re already using small reactors. They’re great for aircraft carriers and submarines. They’re not used for grid-scale power generation for a reason.

In order for nuclear power to be competitive in the large-scale power market, large nuclear power plants must be built repeatedly. Overpacking small nuclear reactors does not mean that nuclear power can be successful. You lose interest in real-world solutions that can actually make a big difference!
