The results of the foundry market share survey in the second quarter came out.

According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, TSMC has a 71% global foundry market share in the second quarter of this year, up 3 percentage points from the previous quarter.

Samsung Electronics, which took second place, had a market share of 8%, 1%P lower than the previous quarter, followed by SMIC, UMMC, and Global Foundry.

Samsung’s foundry market share once reached 19 percent, but fell in half due to countless quality issues, technology that couldn’t keep up with customer demands, and CEO’s misjudgment.

Samsung Electronics pays different bonuses for each division.

The memory division employees receive more or less bonuses depending on the semiconductor business, but the foundry side has very few bonuses. It’s always in the red.

Therefore, there is a vicious cycle in which foundry employees often move to SK Hynix or other companies, making it more difficult to develop technology or improve quality.

This is how the manager’s mindset to compensate for the results has held him back.

Still, there might be someone who says it’s second in the foundry market.

So let’s take a look at this. Foundry 2.0

When we say foundry in general, we talk about fabs that are designed by fabless customers and produce wafers.

But just making wafers doesn’t make it a semiconductor that goes into AI servers or computers.

We need to test whether it works properly, and we also need packaging that cuts them individually and turns them into devices one by one.

This business is also quite large, and packaging technology is playing an important role in determining semiconductor performance at a time when circuit miniaturization has reached its limit.

Foundry 2.0 is a concept that encompasses not only pure wafer foundry but also the entire semiconductor ecosystem such as non-memory IDM (design and manufacturing integrated company), OSAT (outdoor packaging and testing company), and photomask manufacturers.

Global semiconductor ‘Foundry 2.0’ market sales in the second quarter of 2025 are growing so fast that they soared 19% from the same period last year.

Then, what is the market share of each company based on Foundry 2.0?

No. 1 is still TSMC with 38% share, No. 2 is ASE, No. 3 is Texas Instruments (TI), followed by Intel Foundry, No. 4 and Infineon, No. 5.

Samsung Electronics is sixth with a market share of 4%.

Samsung Electronics was only 3 percent while TSMC rose 44 percent, ASE 13 percent, and TI 16 percent from the same period last year.

If the overall market rose only 3% while it rose 19%, that means that the market was lost to competitors.

All six fabs that Samsung Electronics plans to build in Yongin at a cost of 300 trillion won are system semiconductors, or foundry fabs.

Samsung Electronics, which is already building two in the United States, is going to build a foundry fab there because the state will provide a national industrial complex in Yongin while even teasing the existing foundry fab?

That can’t be right.

There’s a good chance I’ll sneak into a memory fab.

Initially, the world’s largest system semiconductor cluster of 300 trillion won announced by Yoon Suk Yeol was a fiction, and there is no possibility that it will happen.

So, we need to stop working on the national industrial complex, which is being carried out by damaging the green belt and evicting the natives, and rethink it from the ground up.

If the AI era continues as it is now, we need additional memory semiconductor fabs.

However, all major U.S. companies that order semiconductors for AI are demanding compliance with RE100.

There is no other way but to build a RE100 industrial complex in Honam, which is rich in renewable energy, and build that memory fab.

It’s too late to start right now.

Shouldn’t the ruling and opposition parties put their heads together while brushing their teeth with the president’s appearance on entertainment programs? Huh?
