FSD v12 is likely to be pushed back by early next year. Tesla China is reportedly planning to resume construction in the third phase of the Gigafactory Shanghai region. The construction could pave the way for Tesla to produce the next generation of affordable electric vehicles, which are highly anticipated in China.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, local Chinese news outlet Late Post says Tesla has actually started preparing for Giga Shanghai’s third phase of expansion in 2021. The company has also reportedly formed a team for the project. However, the plan was reportedly shelved last year, with some of the employees hired in the third phase being relocated to other departments.
According to the Late Post, Chinese industry insiders have speculated that if Tesla is able to successfully expand Giga Shanghai’s Phase 3 region, its location could prioritize the company’s production of affordable electric vehicles, which will build on its highly anticipated next-generation platform. Tesla’s next-generation platform is at the heart of the company’s goal of achieving 20 million vehicles a year by 2030.
Gigafactory Shanghai is currently positioned as Tesla’s most efficient factory. At least for now, it only takes 37 seconds for the car to get off the line in Giga Shanghai, while Gigafactory Texas takes 76 seconds. With the expected production efficiency, Tesla’s next-generation cars are likely to record output that is very difficult to match elsewhere.
According to a previous report, Tesla aimed to double Giga Shanghai’s annual production capacity to 2 million units through a planned three-step expansion. The company’s latest Q3 2023 update letter estimates that its Shanghai plant will now produce more than 950,000 vehicles per year. This makes Giga Shanghai Tesla’s largest production hub worldwide.
If recent reports in China are accurate, Tesla will soon have two notable construction projects in the country. Earlier this year, Tesla signed a deal with Shanghai’s Lingang authorities to build a mega factory in the area. Similar to its sister factory in Lasrop, California, the mega factory will produce MegaPack batteries, Tesla’s flagship energy storage product, designed specifically for large-scale use.
