Recently, when patients ask me to prescribe omega-3 for preventive purposes, I ask them not to take it as much as possible.
Omega-3, which anyone would have taken at least once.
Omega-3, which has long been considered essential for heart health, has little or no effect on preventing cardiovascular disease.
🧵In 2023, six major medical organizations, including the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Heart Association (ACC), announced a new position on the effectiveness of omega-3 in preventing cardiovascular diseases through the “Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Chronic Coronary Diseases”.
📑📑 Key findings 📑📑
✅ Meta-analysis results
Analysis of 🔎86 randomized controlled clinical studies (RCTs) shows that omega-3 has little or no effect on cardiovascular disease prevention.
🔎In particular, low-dose omega-3 did not reduce major cardiovascular events (MACE) in coronary artery disease.
🔎 A meta-analysis of 14 clinical trials of 24,85 patients with a history of cardiovascular disease also showed no preventive effect
✅STRENGTH Research
🔎 High-dose omega-3 was administered to 13,078 patients with high-risk cardiovascular disease per day, but it was not shown to be effective.
🔎On the contrary, the incidence of atrial fibrillation was higher in the omega-3 administration group.
✅OMEMI research
🔎In a study of 1,000 patients with myocardial infarction aged 70–82, there was no significant difference in cardiovascular incidence between the Omega-3-administered and placebo groups
✅EPA-related research
Only 🔎EPA (Icosapent ethyl) was effective in reducing deaths from coronary artery disease or cardiovascular disease by 20%.
🩸However, it is pointed out that the results are different for each study, so the accuracy is poor
🚨🚨🚨New Recommendations 🚨🚨🚨
🧵General recommendations
-It is recommended to treat diabetes or improve lifestyle rather than omega-3 supplements.
-It is recommended to virtually stop using omega-3 supplements for the purpose of preventing cardiovascular disease.
🧵Limited use
-It is still used in clinical practice for specific purposes such as improving triglyceride levels or dry eyes.
-Omega-3 as a prescription drug can be prescribed to patients with hypertriglyceridemia at the discretion of the doctor
