As of 2024, the world’s top pure battery

As of 2024, the world’s top pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) “production” is BYD at 1,777,965 units. It’s 4,500 more than Tesla’s 1,774,442 units. That’s a change of the world’s No. 1 in EV production.

On the other hand, the rankings change again based on sales. Tesla has 1,789,226 units and BYD has 1,764,992 units, a 24,234 unit gap. Tesla’s low sales are down 19,355 units, or 1.07%, from 1,808,51, in 2023, the first drop in sales in Tesla’s history. The difference between production and sales is due to differences in inventory and transportation.

The reason for this sales was that sales in the first and second quarters of 2024 fell 9% and 5% year-on-year, respectively. The Berlin Giga Factory stopped production for two weeks due to transport disruptions in the Red Sea between late January and mid-February, and the arson on March 5 reduced production by about 5,000 units in a week. Roughly speaking, the two incidents affected production by around 1.5 million units.

On the other hand, it is true that the Highland, the Model 3 facelift, has been able to order/sell in North America since January, and sales have increased steadily in the fourth quarter of the year. Nevertheless, sales have clearly decreased compared to the past increase in at least double-digit sales.

First of all, based on the U.S., the Biden administration is defending itself with $7,500 in subsidies and tariffs on Chinese cars, but in China, it is losing ground in competition with new companies such as BYD and Xiaomi. To be precise, it means that consumers with wider choices are choosing cars from other brands. The lack of possibility of recovering sales in China, the world’s largest market, can be interpreted as difficult to increase sales.

And the always-talked-about issue of Elon Musk doesn’t seem to be positive. YouGov surveyed 5037 U.S. adults on October 12, 2024. When asked whether they liked or disliked Elon Musk, 45 percent of the respondents said they liked him and 40 percent said they liked him. In addition, 30 percent said they would use less of his services or products because they supported Trump. Forty-six percent said they supported him, and 13 percent said they would spend more. They won’t affect sales, but the negative factors are different. If there is an alternative to choose from here, there is a risk that sales will decrease.

In the meantime, BYD’s new energy vehicles (NEVs), including BEVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), overall sales increased 41.26 percent from 3,024,417 in 2023 to 4,272,145 units. In 2023, BEV and PHEV sales were not accurately announced, but somehow, BEV increased 12.08 percent from 1,574,822 (estimated) to 1,764,992 in 2023 and PHEV increased 72.83% from 1,438,077 (estimated) to 2,485,378. If you look at the entire automobile market in China, the ratio will be similar. Anyway, it is said that there will be 12 million NEVs.

The growth rate is even more remarkable. BYD’s NEVs in 2018 were less than 200,000 units, but it started to focus on stopping production of pure combustion locomotives in 2022. It overtook Volkswagen to become the No. 1 seller in China in 2023, and NEVs sold a cumulative 5 million units in August 23, and 10 million units at the end of last year.

Not only did the company exceed its original sales target of 3.6 million units in 2023, but it also sold 417,204 units overseas. This alone is an increase of 71.86% year-on-year. It is certain that this share will grow further in 2025.

Years ago, they said, “No matter how good the marketability is, no matter how competitive the price is, not everyone chooses it. Some people don’t want to be in the same car, and others don’t like it.

What about 2025? Personally, I think PHEV sales growth will continue at this level. It will become a market that replaces internal combustion locomotives. On the other hand, I don’t think the electric vehicle market will be able to grow 30% to 40% annually like in the past.
